General Music Discussion, 7/16/24 – Alt-pop and Writer’s Block

I came across a post on Instagram earlier of a gentleman discussing putting in work on something every single day, no matter what that may look like. He said, “if you’re tired, write about being tired. If you’re sad, write about being sad”, etc. This is something that my perfectionist nature claws and screams at with much apprehension. I’ve wanted to keep this blog strictly related to music, but in the spirit of writing and how much I actually find myself missing it, I’m going to keep these entries much more open and transparent about my life than I initially bargained for. In my previous post I discussed how I’ve been running myself ragged with music curation and trying to find as many niche interesting artists as I possibly can. Alongside this, I’ve been hitting some of the worst writer’s block I can remember ever having. There are these two ideas that are in the same sort of “Orbit.Emo” realm I’ve described previously, I suppose one more than the other. Both are fairly concise loops compositionally and don’t feature any more than 3 chords. I can solo over these just fine, but it’s coming up with the next sections that is driving me mad. One concept is just dangling lyrics in front of me, I can almost hear them perfectly. It’s funny because from a compositional/songwriting standpoint, I can almost hear something straight out of the blues, but from a production standpoint I really want to pursue a hip, melancholic alt-pop kind of avenue. I wouldn’t mind something adjacent to Caroline Polachek’s Desire I Want to Turn Into You, or Billie Eilish’s phenomenal new LP HIT ME HARD AND SOFT. Both of these records boast slightly left-of-center approaches to typical pop production, and really tap into some incredible potential. Bold creativity meets verse-chorus structure and catchy hook melodies. Alt-pop is indeed the vibe. I would absolutely cite Julia Holter (“Spinning”, “Betsy on the Roof”, “Our Sorrows”, “Silhouette”, “Words I Heard”) and even Björk (“Hidden Place”, “Venus as a Boy”, “Big Time Sensuality”, “Army of Me”) as more great female artists also exhibiting this approach. I believe that is all for tonight, I tire and have work in the morning. I maintain, I hope I kept you all somewhat engaged with my ramblings and am excited to write more tomorrow. Take care, and keep practicing,

David.
